Obituary for Ella Maxine Henderson

Surrounded by family, Ella Maxine Henderson entered Heaven peacefully on July 31, 2018, in Oklahoma City. Born in Watonga, OK, on February 4, 1934, to Harvey and Opal Stoops, Maxine graduated from Greenfield High School, where she developed a love for basketball that followed her throughout her life. Maxine attended business school in El Paso, TX, and on December 27, 1951, she married the late Grady Henderson in Tucumcari, NM. During their marriage, Grady’s service to the Army afforded him and Maxine a wealth of experiences, including living and travelling throughout Europe and America until their eventual retirement in Mustang, OK. In her lifetime, Maxine held a variety of positions including in a clothing factory, as an office secretary, and as the owner of a BBQ restaurant. As she would note, however, her greatest role was that of mom and grandma. Maxine and Grady had three children, six grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, and four great-great grandchildren, several of whom proudly carry the flame of her beautiful red hair. With so many family members living in close proximity, Maxine’s home was the hub for all family gatherings, much to her delight. Hosting her family for holidays brought Maxine so much joy, laughter, and invariably headaches once the raucous games and contests reached a fever pitch. But Maxine loved fun and she loved her family. She always indulged their made-up games, their visiting pets, their picky food preferences, and their heated political debates. Playing dominos and cards with her relatives was always on the docket at family gatherings and lucky was the person who got to be on her team! Maxine also treasured the times when her family members all got together to play music and sing. When family wasn’t around and the house was quiet, Maxine enjoyed reading, particularly good mystery novels. Carrying on Maxine’s memory on earth and looking forward to the day they meet her again are son, Grady Lee (Cathy); daughter, Nita; daughter Traci Henderson-Pellar (Jim); brother John Stoops (Roberta); sister, Betty Schimmels; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, and not-quite-beloved-but-always-tolerated grandpets. Maxine was preceded in death by her husband, Grady Truman; father, Harvey; mother, Opal; and brother, Bob Stoops. Maxine lived a good life as a devoted Christian and her family takes comfort in knowing she is now celebrating a new beginning in Heaven with the friends and family who left this earth before her. The family wishes to thank numerous neighbors and friends of Maxine who have offered support and assistance over the years, as well as staff of Baptist Village for their caring and compassion during Maxine’s stay. A graveside service will be held Monday, August 6, at 10am in the Mustang Cemetery in Mustang, OK. In lieu of flowers, family request donations be made to the Henderson family Walk to End Alzheimer’s team
