Obituary for Charles "Gene" Sims

On Friday morning, June 22, 2018, Charles Eugene Sims, “Gene”, went home to safely rest in his Savior’s loving arms. He was born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on August 2, 1947 at Wesley Hospital to Dolphia and Jewel Sims. Gene grew up in South Oklahoma City and graduated from Capitol Hill High School as an accomplished scholar and athlete. He was known by teachers as an energetic, hard-working, kind, and dependable student. He was liked by all. In his young high school years, he developed his love and skill for the game of basketball. This love of competition and hard work was later passed on to his two girls and his grandchildren. In high school, he met Jeanette, the absolute love of his entire life, and later married her on January 7 of 1966. In 1967, Gene was drafted for military duty. On August 30, 1967, he reported for his induction into the Armed Forces of the United States. After basic and leadership training was complete, Gene was sent to Non-Commissioned Officers School and from there to serve as a Staff Sergeant in Vietnam. He served his country as a Screaming Eagle in the 101st Airborne Division Recon Platoon. Gene returned home with numerous honors and medals including the Bronze Star and an Army Commendation medal for his bravery in combat. He returned to work at Tinker Air Force Base and graduated from the University of Central Oklahoma summa cum laude with a degree in physics. Later, he went to work for the Federal Aviation Agency as an Electronics Engineer where he became an instructor at the Aeronautical Academy. He retired from there after 40 years and 6 months in January of 2007. Gene enjoyed playing and coaching basketball. He enjoyed golfing, sporting events, and eating good food. He loved spending holidays with family. He even learned to enjoy shopping with his two girls and wife. He was a loving and cherished father to his two girls, two sons (in law), and, in time, 13 grandchildren. His wife and family were his greatest joys in this life. He was a merciful, compassionate, loving man who led his family with humility and faithfulness. He was thoroughly involved in each of his children and grandchildren’s lives and activities. He worked hard at not missing a moment of sharing himself with all of his family wholeheartedly. He has left a legacy that we all hold onto and desire to follow.
Gene would want all to know that he lived and died knowing Jesus Christ as his Savior and Lord--that he was saved by God’s grace alone, and that grace is available to all. He would want you to know Jesus as he did.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Dolphia and Jewel Sims, two brothers, Ulman Dee and Ricky Preston Sims, and his first-born grandson, Kannon Isham Manis. He is survived by his wife, Jeanette Sue Sims; two daughters, Mischelle and husband Dustin Manis and Chandra and husband Jason Grisham; grandchildren; Katherine, Koal, and Kasey Jack Manis and Jonah and his wife Chandler, Jacob, Jarrett, Judah, Josiah, James Mark, Julianna, Jenna, and Jaxon Grisham.

“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward.” Colossians 3:23-24
“He has shown you, O man, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.” Michah 6:8
