Obituary for Carmen Julia Wedekind

Carmen Julia Wedekind, age 61, passed away Thursday, May 3, 2018. She was born July 20, 1956 in San Juan, Puerto Rico to Arturo and Carmen Lopez. She attended the University of Nebraska where she met and married her husband of 36 years Daniel Wedekind. They lived in Kansas City before retiring to Oklahoma City in 2015. She was preceded in death by her father. She is survived by her husband Daniel, two sons; Joshua and wife Bee and Elijah, two daughters; Sarah and husband Erie Gonzalez and Jessica, four grandchildren; Valeria, Iulia, Benjamin and Josiah. Also by her mother Carmen and one brother; Gary Lopez. Funeral Services will be 2:00pm Tuesday, May 8, 2018 at McNeil’s Funeral Service, Mustang, Oklahoma with burial to follow at Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery, Branson, MO.
An important part of Carmen’s legacy was her family. Carmen decided from the beginning of her married life that she wanted her home to be a special place that brought the family together. She could not have been more successful in doing so and was able to create an “Oasis” in her home that brought not only her family together, but also touched the lives of many people. Carmen was fierce in fighting for her children, nursing them through sickness, encouraging them in their talents, and making them laugh even in the most difficult times. She was a dedicated daughter that spent many years taking care of her mother, a devoted wife without comparison, a mother that would never give up on her children in any situation, and a grandmother that would even play dolls with her grandchildren to make them happy. Through the years she has hosted countless events at her home to bring together friends and family and even total strangers. These Friday night Erev Shabbat dinner gatherings became an almost weekly event that consisted of great and abundant food, good conversation, some Bible reading, lots of music, and joy. Sometimes called the Friday night “Jam Sessions”, these evenings brought together people from many different backgrounds, religions, and nationalities in the spirit of Messiah’s love.
Carmen was always helping people. She had a special sensitivity to people’s needs and would often manage to find that certain someone that no one else had noticed had a need whether it was a material need, counseling, prayer, or just someone to talk to. It would take a book to recount all of the times that she intervened in people’s lives to make a profound difference. She especially had a heart for children and would do anything to help children in need including performing her much loved clown act from time to time. As one mother would often say, “Carmen is our Guardian Angel.” She was also the driving force behind the SHMAmusic ministry. Carmen was the one that insisted that each of her children should be allowed to pick an instrument and learn to play it. She was the one that started the music outreach. She made all of the contacts and arranged all of the events throughout the years. It was her great desire to get well enough not only to see her children and grandchildren, but also to return to music ministry. She was a teacher, conference speaker, and gifted percussionist. SHMAmusic would never have existed if it had not been for her.
In Matthew 25:23 it says, “His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!” Carmen is now experiencing all joy in the presence of the Holy One. She leaves a huge void in the lives of the many, many people that she has touched. May that void inspire us to reach out to others as she did, to live each day to the very fullest, and to look forward to seeing her again when we reach our eternal home where we hope to hear the words that she most certainly heard when she arrived, “Well done, good and faithful servant!”
