Obituary for Lewis Warren Sample

Lewis W. Sample, age 97, Oklahoma City, OK, died February 28, 2034. (His actual date of death was December 6, 2018, age 82, but true to form, we were made aware after his passing that he had written his own obituary and given it to the funeral home. These are his words.) Lewis was born March 28, 1936, 12 miles north of Mooreland, OK, to Lorin W. and Eva (Reed) Sample. He graduated from Fort Supply High School in 1954. Lewis was a veteran, serving from 1955 through 1958 in the United States Air Force. In 1958 he participated in Pacific atomic testing at Johnston Island. He graduated from Panhandle A&M College (later Panhandle State University) at Goodwell, OK in 1963. Lewis began working for FAA in 1963 as a computer programmer. He worked there as a computer professional until his retirement in 1991. Lewis and Jean (Conner) Ore were married on October 23, 1965, in Oklahoma City. Lewis had many loves in his life, his family, his work in the computer field, his friends, aviation, and his race cars. He raced open-wheel dirt cars at local dirt tracks until a bad crash in 1978 when he decided to quit. Lewis was preceded in death by his father Lorin on February 25, 1983, his mother Eva on August 21, 2012, and by his brother Wesley on February 27, 2005. Lewis is survived by his former wife, Jean; daughter Tracy and husband Bobby Sellars and grandchildren Nicholas Lundstrom, Savelle Henderson and great-grandson Tristan Gabriel Lundstrom Henderson, Samantha and husband Stevie Williams and great-granddaughter Sophia Jean Williams, and Trey Sellars; daughter Nicole Walden, Joey Curtis and grandchildren Sharayah and husband William Miller, great-granddaughter Emery Addyson Miller, and great-grandson Micaiah Alexander Miller, Kyndal Hearne, Carson-Lewis Hearne, Alexis Hankey and great-granddaughter Zeppelin Marie Nicole Hearne. He is also survived by one brother Chuck and wife Jewel; three sisters Betty Allen, Loretta Harwood, and Roxie and husband Mike Luckie; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles, and many friends.
