Obituary for J.W. Byrd

J was born in Caldwell, TX, on February 7, 1937, though h3e always said he was born in Dime Box, TX. He entered the U. S. Air Force when he was 17 years old, and served very proudly for 20 years. After retiring from the Air Force as a MSgt, he worked in Civil Service for an additional 17 years before retiring from FAA to pursue his loves of golfing, fishing, traveling with his wife and family, and spending quality, fun time with his family and friends. J’s wife of 40 years is Bonnie Byrd. J has 4 children- Lisa Watson, Judy Kegin, Chris Cargill, and Shawna Carter. He has 7 grandchildren- SMSgt Shaun Kegin, David Kegin, Josh Watson, Lauren Nichols, Addison Howell, Sheridan Carter, and Landon Cargill. He has also has 8 great-grandchildren-Morgan, Gunner, Colin, and Addy Kegin, Chris and Lily Watson, Henry (Smith) Howell, and Maddie Roach. He has 4 surviving brothers- Jonny Andrews and his wife Nonni, Julius Widner and his wife Sue, Clifford Andrews and his wife Virginia, and Robert Andrews. He was predeceased by his mother, Thelma Gray Widner, 2 sisters, and 5 brothers. J fought a valiant fight for over two years with multiple strokes that gradually took away his ability to fight any longer. He moved on to a hight place on January 31, 2019, to live on as a happy, healthy man, hopefully golfing with his buddies who moved on before him. J attended the Community of Christ Church, and was very dedicated in helping wherever he was needed. He also greatly enjoyed helping on “work days” at the church-owned campground in Stillwater. He very much loved, valued, and was blessed by the many wonderful friends he and Bonnie have had in their church family and beyond. There were many who looked forward to and will certainly miss his hugs on Sunday mornings! J was a very loving, caring, compassionate man who valued his family, friends, church, God, and country with all his heart. A special thanks to those who have loved, helped, supported, and cheered him on-his wife, children, grandchildren, siblings, friends, Luckie(Hospice aide), and nurses and doctors at Integris Baptist Hospital and Integris Hospice House.A celebration of J’s life will be a the Community of Christ Church, 1200 E. Danforth, Edmond, Ok, on February 23, 2019, at 2:00 PM.
