Obituary for Deborah Joyce Smith

The world was made a richer place when Deborah Joyce Smith was born to Barbara Joyce Dockery and Jackie Dale Smith on May 24, 1970 at Hillcrest Hospital in Oklahoma City.

Deborah touched everyone’s heart that she ever met and she made our lives a little richer with her presence. Strangers she spoke with on the elevator at her “office” still ask about her years after the encounter, and people in the stores where she shopped had to stop and listen, smiling all the while, while she told them about her job or her home. She was the happiest person you could ever hope to meet and her happiness was infectious.

When she was 6 years old, she was hit by a car and rightfully should have died, but spent 13 months in a coma, and it is strongly suspected that time was spent with Jesus, sitting on His lap and walking with Him.

After the accident Deborah had to learn to do everything all over again, and soon she was much stronger, walking with assistance and going up and down stairs. Life went on, she went to school and was proud to graduate.

Deborah loved working and always wanted to be independent and self-supportive. She was always ready to help cook, wash the dishes or lend a hand with anything she could. She had a job for a while after graduation and really enjoyed it while it lasted.

Deborah moved to Westview Cottages in Guthrie, Oklahoma, in August of 2016. The car accident left her paralyzed on one side, legally blind and lame, but it did not faze her spirit. She had a zest for life that you seldom see and her happiness was so contagious! Deborah loved Westview Cottages, that was her second home and her other family, and she told everyone she met how she loved it there and she was so proud that she was now taking care of herself.

Deborah loved Jesus with all her heart, loved her family and music, and had a wicked sense of humor. She knew all the cousins, nephews, nieces names, ages, birthdays, spouses and kid’s names.

She was a rock, she was a prayer warrior, she blessed everyone she met, and everyone who met her was somehow touched by this Godly woman.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Jackie Dale Smith Jr., her mother Barbara Joyce Daves, her stepdad Bill Whitson and her cousin, Chealsy Dockery. She is survived by her father, Jackie Dale Smith Sr., her sister Jennifer Smith and family, her brother Jerry Boucher and family, her aunt Jeannette Hulsey and family, her uncle Gary Dockery and family, her uncle Wayne Dockery and family, and uncle Eddie Dockery and family.

Deborah had traumatic brain damage and many strikes against her physically, but she taught us how we are supposed to live with love and grace. Seldom an unkind word for anyone, Deborah was so sweet, so happy and full of love right up until she was taken from us. Heaven couldn’t possibly be any better place now because Deborah was already an angel, she had that role perfected and now she’s just gone home.
