Obituary for Mary Lou Owens

Following a brief illness, and surrounded by family and friends, Mary Louise Lawson Owens, 79, left this earth on Wednesday, April 4 to join her heavenly Lord and Savior. She is survived by her husband, James H. Owens of the home and two daughters.
Mary Lou was born November 2, 1938 in Mehan, OK and following the death of her biological mother was taken to Cushing, OK where she was adopted as an infant by a Christian couple, Harden and Veva Lawson. Mary Lou was very active in the First Baptist Church of Cushing where she and her future husband shared enrollment in the church’s nursery. She was baptized at the church at the age of nine.
She received her education in Cushing, graduating in the class of 1957 from Cushing High School, where she worked part-time for the school newspaper, the Cushing High School Oiler. Following graduation she went to work for the Cushing Daily Citizen, starting as a proofreader, then advancing to the society editor’s position.
On June 15, 1958, Mary Lou Lawson and Jim Owens were married in the First Baptist Church of Cushing. The couple would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary this June.
Her husband was serving in the USAF, at the time of their union, and stationed at Salina, KS. She spent the last two years of his four-year term of service with him there before returning to Cushing where he worked in the pipeline department of Midland Refinery. They later moved to Midwest City, where he worked for Tinker AFB, and Mary Lou became a stay-at-home mom. A transfer, of her husband, to the FAA took their family to Mustang, OK. Mary Lou worked there as news director for the Mustang Mirror.
Earning a bachelor’s degree in education, Mary Lou joined the teaching staff at Lakehoma Elementary, as a second-grade teacher. She joined the new school in Mustang the year it opened and enjoyed sixteen years teaching there before retiring.
Mary Lou and Jim spent much of their time traveling, visiting all 50 states, and were members of the Oklahoma HitchHiker RV club for many years. They have also been active members of Chisholm Heights Baptist Church serving in multiple ministries since November 1973.
Survivors are the husband of the home; two daughters and their families: Rebecca (Becky) and Robert (Bob) Dobson and Daniel Dobson and Nancy and Carlton Curtis and sons John and Joshua Curtis, their wives and five grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers and a beloved son, David James Owens.
Services will be 11:00am on Saturday, April 7 at Chisholm Heights Baptist Church, Mustang, OK, with interment to follow at Mustang Cemetery.
