Obituary for Jo Ann Landrum

Jo Ann Starr Landrum, a resident of Mustang, OK, passed away on Friday, September 8, 2017, at Mercy Hospital at the age of 83. Joann was born on October 28, 1933, to Jose and Inez Starr and was proud of her Cherokee heritage. She graduated high school from Kansas, OK at the young age of 16, and entered college early at Bacone College formerly Bacone Indian University, located in Muskogee. While there, she met her future husband, David M. Landrum. Joann went on and obtained her Bachelors and Masters degrees in Business Education from the University of Central Oklahoma. She was an excellent teacher and was a professor at Oklahoma City Community College (OCCC) until her retirement. She was named an Outstanding Alumni from Bacone and inducted into the Bacone Alumni Hall of Fame. She also received the Elwin Gray Award from OCCC for going the extra mile for students and the college and for “service above and beyond.” She continued to work part-time after retirement for OCCC and other jobs in order to keep her busy. Joann’s many interests included square dancing, ballroom dancing, and listening to the music of her brother Dennis Starr. She was an ardent FOX News fan and enjoyed talking politics with her companion and best friend, Ed Matthews. She enjoyed going to the casino, traveling with Ed and having lunch with the WOB (Women of Business) group. She loved babysitting, her Iphone photos, and spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren who called her Nanny. She will be sadly missed by: Brother: Kenneth David Starr and wife Betty. Children: David M. Landrum Jr. and wife Patricia and Karen Landrum Young and husband Brett. Grandchildren: Kyle Young and wife Rosa, Sarah Landrum Everett and husband Caleb, and Denny Landrum. Great-grandchildren: Jesse Young, Jayce Young, Jaxon Young, and Landry Everett. Others: The Starr Family: Evelyn, Rhonda, Georgia, Gerald, Hellon, Paul, and Paula, along with many cousins, great nieces and nephews. Nephew and Pastors Denny and Sandy Landrum. Joann was pre-deceased by brothers James “Sonny” Starr, Dennis Starr, Wayne Starr and Ex-husband David M. Landrum. A special thanks to Mercy Hospital, Dr. Michael Anderson, Dr. James Reeves, and especially, Ed Matthews who was her tireless caretaker for the last several years. Also, thanks to her close and loyal friends, Jenean and Jenny, who visited her regularly during her illness and to her other friends. Honorary Pallbearers: Ed Mathews, Jim Baker, Brett Young, Kyle Young, Denny Landrum, Shane Lawson, Paul Starr, and Gerald Starr. Services to be held at McNeil Funeral Home in Mustang on September 13, 2017 at 10:00am. In lieu of flowers donations to Mercy Hospital, Oklahoma City.
