Obituary for Christine Cora Gray

Christine Cora Gray, 94, daughter of the late Grover and Cora Speaks, passed away peacefully on Monday September 18 surrounded by her loved ones at home. Born in 1922 in Antlers, Oklahoma, Chris spent her childhood on her family’s farm in Kellond, nestled among the foothills above the Kiamichi River. She attended both Antlers High School and later, Moyers High School where she joined the Pep Club. In 1941, Chris married Leo Barcum and they had three beautiful children. After Leo passed in 1960, Chris attended Draughon’s Business College and served 22 years as an office secretary for Grace Assembly of God Church in Oklahoma City before retiring in 1988. Chris lived every day of her life in unyielding service to her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Her selfless love, grace and elegance were profound in every word, every action. Chris emanated dignity, faith, compassion, strength and warm kindness that immediately made those lucky enough to know her feel special and loved. Throughout her life, Chris explored and perfected many talents including gardening, quilting, painting, writing and traveling. Her passion for the outdoors that began as a young girl exploring the foothills of the Kiamichi River lasted throughout her life from short road adventures to world travels. She was an avid reader from childhood where she spent many afternoons in the family farm’s barn loft reading the adventure stories by Robert Louis Stevenson. Later, her perfect morning involved a strong cup of coffee, bird watching, tending her gardens and reading the Gospel. Her love of the written Word developed into a skill for crafting beautiful, eloquent handwritten letters and other writings. Throughout her remarkable life, Chris always proudly remained “the farm girl;” faithful, hardworking, hopeful. She passed on to her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren a legacy of relentless faith in God’s love, grace, poise, generosity and integrity. Chris is survived by her three children, daughter Linda Groves and her husband Gene, son Robert and his wife Rhonda, son Michael and his wife Susan; seven grandchildren and their spouses Bryan Groves (Julie), Tiffany Janish (Darrel), Brandon Groves (Shelley), Robert Scott Barcum (Christi), Ashley Barcum, Alisha Cawthon (Ron) and Jeremy Barcum; great grandchildren Josh, Ryan, Kaitlyn, Gabby (Cody), Coleson, Elliot, Lexi, Eli, Bryson, Carter, Emily, Jillian, Zeke, Nate, Ellie, Brandon, Courtney, Aiden and Addison; great-great grandchildren; Piper, Roari, Malakai and Tucker; sisters Amy “Billie” Beal and Tommie Webster; and countless other loved ones including cousins, nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband Leo Barcum (d. 1960), Chris was preceded by her parents Grover Newton and Cora Lee Rogers Speaks, brother Ephraim (Roger) Speaks, sisters Geraldine, Violet, Jackie and Dorothy, husband Rawleigh Gray (d. 1996) and husband Joe Adams (d). Funeral Services will be 10:00am Thursday, September 21, 2017 at Southpointe Church (13300 Straka Farm Rd, OKC, OK 73173) with a private family interment to follow in Memorial Park Cemetery , Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
